Episode Summary[]

At the start of the episode, Austin pushes Dez on a shopping cart into Sonic Boom, with Dez immatating a fanfare and applause. Ally asks what they're doing to which Dez says he's practicing his parade wave as he's going to be on the float for the homecoming parade, as he is a cheerleader. Ally asks what the theme of the float is this year and Dez reveals he is the one building it, saying the theme is going to be "The ocean world or habitat, if you will, of our mascot, the majestic Marino High manatee, sometimes referred to as the sea cow". Just then, Trish comes in saying she has big news. She just spoke to Ronnie Ramone and he wants Ally to write a song with Gavin Young, a talented, hot country singer (who Trish says she's going to try and steal as a client). Ally isn't sure if she wants to work with Gavin, as she would be doing all the work and thinks he's just some pretty boy who knows nothing about music. Trish says Ally doesn't know that, saying they know someone who's proven that being pretty doesn't mean they're not talented, referring to Austin. Austin agrees and says Ally should work with Gavin. Ally questions him, saying he doesn't mind her working with someone else which Austin tells her it's only the one song and it would be good for her career. Ally agrees and tells Trish to inform Ronnie.

Austin enters the practice room and asks if she wants to work on a new song. Ally says she can't as she has a meeting with Gavin, adding she has a feeling she'll be writing his songs while he styles his hair. Trish enters and introduces the two to Gavin. He apologises for being late, saying he saw a sign for a lost basset hound and went looking for it, giving it a bath, brushing it's teeth and buying it a new toy after he found it before returning it. Both Ally and Trish found it cute and "aww"'d him. Gavin notices Austin using the same texture cream as him and talks with Austin before Trish interrupts, saying if he signs with her, she will keep him focused. Gavin appreciates it, but says he already has a manager and it would break his heart if he left him. Ally gets them back on track, telling Gavin songwriting can be difficult and she'll keep it simple for him. They sit down by the piano and she points to her music board. Gavin asks what the black dots and lines are, Ally worrying it's worse than she thought. Though Gavin says he's kidding and he knows its a major pentatonic scale, he's been studying music theory since he was three. Ally is then eased and says it's going to fun, saying she's never written with anyone who knows as much about music as she does. Austin, hiding it via a cough, asks "What about me?", causing Ally to mockingly ask him if he should get that cough checked out.

Meanwhile, Dez and Chuck present their different ideas about the homecoming pep rally float to Kimmy. Dez's idea being about their school's mascot - the manatee and Chuck's idea being about football as it is football season. As always, the two argue about which is better, but Kimmy doesn't care what they do and says all that matters is that they win best float. The two continue arguing after Kimmy leaves.

As Gavin and Ally start to work on a new song for their duet, Austin starts to notice how well they're getting along and is almost sure that Gavin is "stealing" Ally away from him as a songwriter. Not being able to help his obvious jealousy, Austin convinces Trish to help him drive Ally and Gavin apart by saying that Ally will one day sign with Gavin's manager. However, their attempts are useless and in some ways, backfire on them.

Back with Dez and Chuck, they show Kimmy their new float, being half manatee (Dez's idea) and half football (Chuck's idea). This makes Kimmy scream and say it won't win best float. They try and convince her it will by showing their individual features to each of their halves, discovering they both end up sabotaging each other's floats, which turns into Kimmy threatening them to build another them or she kicks them off the squad. The two then realize that they have to work together on their ideas and compromise.

Eventually, Austin decides to confront Ally, but makes her choose between him and Gavin, leaving Ally upset with Austin. At the mall after talking with Dez and Trish, Austin realizes that he still likes Ally and that he wants to get back together with her. When he goes to the practice room to apologize, he plays Better Together for her as a melody. Ally appreciates it but is still mad at Austin. He apologises and says he should never have forced her to choose between him and Gavin. Before he can Ally how he feels and ask if she wants to get back together, however, he is interrupted by Gavin. Austin decides that he can leave talking to Ally for a later time and leaves. Though, when Austin leaves, Gavin asks Ally two things. The first being if they would like to perform their duet together, to which they will at the homecoming pep rally. The second being Gavin asking her to go on a date with him. Ally is caught off-guard by this and is unsure of an answer.

After working together and compromising, Dez and Chuck show Kimmy their improved float, with both the manatee and football ideas combined. The float shows a manatee on a football field that can throw a football through a field goal, which Kimmy is satisfied with. Though, the only problem left was getting the float out of the gym, which they could not figure out. When making her pep rally speech, Kimmy is furious at them for this, but says she has to keep peppy for everyone.

During the pep rally, Ally and Gavin perform their duet, Me and You, to which the audience enjoys (including Austin). Afterwards, Austin talks to Ally about how great she and Gavin were. However, as the two both have things to share, Ally is first to say that she won't be working with Gavin anymore as she has decided to go out with him. Austin is upset by this (knowing that he can no longer ask Ally to get back together with him, leaving him heartbroken), though he tries to hide it for Ally. She hugs Austin, thinking everything is good between them, before going back over to Gavin. Trish comes over to Austin and asks how it went. He tells her they won't be getting back together as her and Gavin are now a couple. Trish is sympathetic and says she's sorry to Austin, before asking if Gavin mentioned anything about Trish becoming his manager, which irritates Austin.

Dez and Chuck run over to Kimmy in the gym, saying they're sorry for messing up the homecoming float and (in an attempt to not get kicked off the squad) that they have an idea for next year's float. It cuts to both of them on their football/manatee float, with Dez in a corn dog costume and Chuck in a pink bunny costume. Kimmy if confused and says she doesn't get it. Dez and Chuck look at eachothers costumes and argue, Dez saying he thought they were going to be corn dogs as people love food on a stick, and Chuck saying they were supposed to do bunnies as people love fluffy things that hop. They continue arguing as the credits roll.

Memorable Quotes[]

Dez: While you do that, I'll practice my parade wave. (Waves hand)

Trish: (Waves back at him)
Dez: Oh, you're practicing yours, too?

Trish: No, I just want you to leave. Goodbye!

Austin: I got one. You can tune a piano, but you can't tunafish.

Trish: Come on, Austin. Let's get out of here. I think their dorkiness is rubbing off on you.

Ally: ♫ Never known anyone like you before. ♫

Gavin: ♫ Someone who can make me smile when I've fallen down on the floor. ♫
Austin: (sits between Ally and Gavin) Sorry to interrupt, but I really need your help, Ally.
Ally: Can't it wait?

Austin: No, this is really important. I'm trying to finish a melody to a song we were supposed to write together. Should it go (plays piano keys) Bum bum bum bum. Or, bum bum bum boom.

Trivia[]

  • Austin admitted to still having feelings for Ally and wanted to get back together with her. Unfortunately, he had lost her to Gavin.
  • This episode might have been a spin-off of Princesses & Prizes and Campers & Complications, because in those episodes, Austin said he would be jealous of Ally hanging out with or dating another guy. In the former episode, Austin was very jealous of Ally spending time/dating Gavin Young. In the latter episode, he was jealous of Ally spending time with her old camp friend, Elliot.
  • Trish helped Austin steal Ally back from Gavin, unfortunately, it didn't work.
  • The 'Auslly Arc' continues in this episode (tenth part).
  • Trish's hair changed in this episode, being straighter.
  • The "I Didn't Do It" episode "Falling for... Who?" ending was similar to this episode as Logan finally realized his feelings for Jasmine, just like Austin realized he still had feelings for Ally. Logan (Austin) tried to ask Jasmine (Ally) out, but it was too late, because Jasmine (Ally) had started dating another guy, leaving both guys heartbroken. The only differences between the episodes were that Logan didn't get jealous of Jasmine and Owen dancing, he just realized and admitted his feelings for her, instantly fell in love with her and tried to ask her out. Also, Logan cried over Jasmine and was left completely heartbroken, but Austin didn't cry over Ally and was only a little heartbroken, unlike Logan who suffered from a much bigger heartbreak over Jasmine.

Goofs:[]

  • Disney+ incorrectly lists this episode only as "Ally's New Crush" (its alternate title) instead of "Hunks & Homecoming", for some reason, breaking the tradition of all the episode names rhyming and providing an accurate description of the episode's storyline. The only other episode to have this incorrection is the next episode, Fashion Shows & First Impressions with its alternate title, "Austin's New Crush".
  • In the episode, Dez and Chuck are back to arguing, feuding and even try and sabotage eachother's floats. However, the two became friends and ended their feud at the end of Family & Feuds.
