Overview

Austin writes a song about a girl and after it becomes a musical sensation, fans begin to question who it’s really about. In response, Val sues Austin, Ally, Trish, and Dez, claiming that the song was stolen from her newest artist, and did not withdraw her claim and the matter heads to court where the foursome decides to represent themselves. Meanwhile, Trish and Dez use what they've learned from their favorite show, Crime & Judgment, to find out for whom Austin wrote that song and to clear his name.[2]

Episode Summary

At the beginning of the episode, Austin and Ally are teaching a customer at Sonic Boom to correctly play the triangle when they are shushed by Trish and Dez. The two of them are in armchairs watching the crime-lawyer show, Crime & Judgement. They aim to watch all 182 episodes of the newly-released collector's edition, even showing the other two the cool breifcase it came in. Suddenly, Val comes into Sonic Boom to visit Austin and Ally; she wants them to write a song for her to use so that her Stray Kitties can have their first big hit. They decline - saying they are too busy with their careers, and they do not want to write a song for the woman that could have provided Ally with a major setback - and Val, infuriated, crushes her scalding hot coffee with her bare hand without flinching as she wishes the gang luck through gritted teeth before leaving.

Meanwhile, while writing their latest song, Ally provides Austin with another opportunity to write lyrics - after a bit of persuasion and a bad sports analogy, Austin decides to try writing another song. Ally even buys him his own songbook, and gives him advice on what to write about.

Four days later, on the same day that Trish and Dez finish binge-watching all 182 episodes of Crime & Judgement, Austin comes in with the news that he finished writing lyrics to his latest single. And despite Trish being a bit uncertain about his song being any good, it ends up becoming a hit song that is played on the radio a lot.

Later on, Val comes back and announces that she has sued them, claiming that she wrote the lyrics to Steal Your Heart and he stole them from her.

They go to court, and for most of their time there, despite the efforts of everyone, they are not very successful and it seems like Val will win the case. Trish and Dez try to figure out who the song Steal Your Heart is about. They think it could be about Brooke since Dez saw Austin give her flowers at school; Austin, at court, then reveals that he simply returned the flowers that Brooke gave him. Another likely candidate was the European Super Model since Dez saw them say 'I love you' to each other near Mini's; Austin explains that he has been giving the model English lessons. They also think that the song is about Kira since Dez saw them talk about a secret that they had; after being persuaded, Kira admitted that they did have a secret, but that they had been trying to get Maroon 5 to play at Ally's surprise birthday party (which she says is not happening anymore). Val gets annoyed and dismisses Trish's case as a waste of time, claiming that she hasn't proven anything and is just stalling, to which the judge agrees.

Trish proposes that Austin performs his song as a solution to the case, which Val immediately objects to and questions its relevance. The judge admits that he doesn't know, but being a big Austin Moon fan, he wants to see him perform anyway. After he performs, Trish says that it proves who Austin wrote the song about. Both Val and the judge are confused, but Trish continues and deduces that the song is about Ally since she was the only one out of the four suspects that he did not 'flirt' with or even look at while performing. She is right; Austin says that she told him to write a song about someone that he cared about, and so he wrote a song about her. Ally asks him if he still has feelings for her, Austin says he doesn't know but that he loves being friends and partners with her and doesn't want to ruin that. Ally understands and is glad they're still friends, but did secretly hope it was about her. Val, disgusted, objects that this proves nothing, but the judge then says that he believes Austin after having seen him perform the song as well as his talk about his inspiration with Ally. Val tries to convince him otherwise by bringing back up the briefcases; the judge says that the briefcases could have been swapped, as seen in episode 73 of Crime & Judgment. It then cuts to a flashback of earlier in the episode, where Val did indeed switch the cases while the gang was distracted with the summons document. The judge then concludes the case and has Austin continue to show evidence in the form of Austin performing the new song. Austin goes over to Val and invites her to dance, showing that even though they're enemies, he doesn't hold grudges against her.

Memorable Quotes

Ally
Excuse me. Oh, I'm sorry. Was my working at my job getting in the way of your TV show?
Dez

Yeah. That's why I told you to "shh".

Dez
This song is all over the radio!
Ally

This is so exciting!

Val
I have a question that needs answering. Why did Austin steal my song?
All
Huh?
Dez
Say what now?
Val

I wrote the song "Steal Your Heart" and then Austin stole it! The song, not my heart.

Trish
You are suing us for stealing "Steal Your Heart"?
Austin
You're just doing us a revenge, 'cause we couldn't write you a song!
Val

See you at court. Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Trish
[after the performance] Well, there's your proof, Sir.
Val
That he's a great singer and dancer? We knew that already!
Trish
No. Now we know who Austin wrote this song about.
Judge
We do?
Trish

Yes! When he sang, he looked at every girl in the room. Except one. There's an obvious explanation. It was too emotional to him. Austin wrote this song about Ally. [everyone on court are shocked; Dez look at Ally with shocked face]

Ally
Um, your honor, may I approach the witness stand?
Judge

You already have, so... yes.

Ally
Austin, is it true? You wrote it about me?
Austin
Yeah... It's true. I should have told you earlier, but I couldn't. You told me to write about someone I care about and... That's you.
Ally
Do you still have feelings for me?
Austin
Psss... No... Yes... I-I don't know... All I know that I love being friends with you, and I don't wanna ruin that. That's why I couldn't say it was about you.
Judge
Awww! [Austin and Ally gives him a look]
Ally
I get it. I'm glad that we're just friends, but... I kinda hope that was about me.
Dez and Trish

Awww! [Ally gives them a look]

Trish
Wait, what does that have to do with anything?
Dez

Nothing. I just wanted you to know I made a pretty mean wedding cake.

Trish
Okay, so the song is not about Brooke.
Brooke
Hey, we don't know that for sure.
Dez

(grabs microphone) He's not into you. MOVE ON!

Trish
We knew you were missing a few screws, lady, but we didn't know you lost the whole toolbox.
Val
Oh, don't act so innocent! You three helped him steal the song!
Ally, Trish, and Dez
(slightly backing away from Val) Whaaat???
Ally
That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard!
Val
A judge will be the judge of that! (gives the gang a book)
Ally
What?! What are you talking about?
Austin

What's a "subpoena"?
